Education
Continuing Education(CE) for a CMA is a required part of the CMA licensure. CMAs are required to have 16 CEs over two years. A CMAII license requires four additional specific CEs. Within the rules and regulations set by the board, an agency must provide opportunities for the CMA to obtain CEs.
NM CMA Consulting has created continuing education specific to the NM CMA. Under the direction of Vanessa McKee, RN, the Director of Education, we have designed education that directly relates to experiences and the scope of function of the NM CMA. Education was created to emphasize the curriculum approved by the NMBON while incorporating rules and regulations. NM CMA Consulting and current state-wide pharmacies generated a list of the commonly used medications in Long-Term Care and Skilled Centers. The most common medications are used to educate the CMA.
For the first time in New Mexico state history, an RN and a CMA have integrated rules and regulations into primary education for the CMA. Providing a higher level of CE will help reduce citations issued by regulatory agencies. Education empowers the CMA to provide excellent care while having a solid foundation in their scope of function.
As the Nurse Educator over the program in your facility, you are responsible for verifying the accuracy of all education provided to the CMA, including providing a way for CMAs to obtain CEs and confirming they have comprehended the educational requirements. Most Nurse Educators are also the Directors of Nursing for many centers, so having additional duties can be overwhelming. Our online program can help alleviate some of those burdens.
NM CMA Consulting has developed an online education portal for CMAs. Our system offers a convenient and time-saving solution, providing education that the Nurse Educator and our Director of Education have approved. CEs are provided to the CMA at no cost, and CMAs can easily log on to our systems to obtain a CE that is automatically graded. Once a CE is completed, a certification of completion is automatically sent to the Nurse Educator for final approval, streamlining the verification process.
